Juggling Between Her 9-5 Job And Been A Soccer Coach, Meggie Ledwaba.

Meggie Ledwaba is taking initiative in getting young boys, under 15 off the streets.

“I have grown to see and learn how young boys end up dedicating their lives to substance abuse and gangsterism, and I couldn’t bask when I knew there was something I could do to reduce that”. Said Meggie.

Meggie is a bubbly 29-year-old, born and bred in Mashashane GaKgasha few kilometres away from the Polokwane CBDs. She is the proud founder and coach of Strickers Soccer Club under 15s that she holds close to her heart, whilst juggling between that and her 9-5 job.

Strickers Soccer Club was established on the 16th March 2024 with the aim of taking young boys off the streets. The same streets that throws our brothers and sisters off the trail of their dreams and passion and to the wolves.

Meggie says she wants to grow as a coach and a human, making a difference in the lives of the boys and that of their parents and the community at large. Further grooming them to know their purpose in life and she further teaches them of several thorns that plaques boys their age.

Meggie says that she always wanted to do something to give back to the community and she has finally he found it, and growing in love with it everyday. The team is practicing Monday-friday at Tigers Sports Ground laying between Mapateng and Segoahleng Villages.

‘I want to make an impact that will live within the boys’s hearts and minds even after couple of years knowing that I never let them go astray under my watch”. Meggie confidently said.

Meggie’s love for her soccer team is evident where she’d spend money from her own pocket to buy the boys some snack and fruits once in a while, making means end to secure friendly games with neighbouring soccer teams, ensuring that the boys has a gear to wear and feel comfortable in, further making sure they never miss a minute to get their homeworks done. It is safe to say that Meggie has the boys’ interest at heart, even outside the soccer field.

“Juggling between my 9-5 job and the soccer team hasn’t been busy but I try giving both my attention they deserves and I’m settling in very well “. She said.

The former coach of Tigers Sports Ground, Mr. Koos Dolo says that he was at first relectanct about a lady of Maggie’s calibre taking over after months of no movement, or rather control at Tigers but Meggie’s consistency and determination drove him back. “We are in need of ladies like Ledwaba as they live to continue making our community a better and ideal place to live in”. He said.

One of the boys, Lefa Ngwetsana says that Meggie is not just a coach, but she is kind, patient, and understanding. “She pushes us to concentration and brings out the best in most of us”.

Meggie and the boys are looking for sponsorship to sponsor their dream of becoming one of the best and recognised teams around the village. “It doesn’t have to be about money, we are also in need of soccer boots, balls, gear, wistles and other accessories “. Says Meggie.

Segoahleng Residents Plunged In A Water Crisis.

Segoahleng, a small rural community in Mashashane Limpopo, has long relied on three water pumps to meet its needs. For years, these pumps provided the community with clean water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and sanitation. Today, the community of Segoahleng, as big as it is have been relying on one water pump, But in recent weeks, the pump suddenly stopped working, plunging the community into a water crisis.

Without access to clean water, Segoahleng residents have been forced to travel long distances to fetch water with their wheelbarrows, often carrying heavy containers on their heads. This has led to increased fatigue and several injuries, as well as a lack of clean water for essential household tasks. The crisis has also led backyard crops to die.

Water is the lifeblood of the community of Segoahleng. For generations, the people of this rural village have relied on a steady supply of clean water for their most basic needs. But in recent weeks, the breakdown of the village’s sole water pump has highlighted just how critical water is to the survival and well-being of the community. Without water, even the simplest of tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, and bathing, become difficult. Beyond the physical challenges, the lack of water is also taking a toll on the mental health of the community.

On a typical morning in Segoahleng, women and children rise before dawn to begin their long journey to collect water. With buckets and jugs in hand, they make their way to the only remaining source of water. It is often crowded, and the wait to fill their containers can take long. Some have even resorted to digging makeshift wells and springs, but these too have been affected by the dry conditions. This daily struggle for water has become a burden for many in the community, taking away time that could be spent on other essential tasks.

For many residents of Segoahleng, the daily fight for water has taken a toll on their mental health and well-being. Many report feeling stressed and overwhelmed by the situation, and some even describe feeling hopeless about the future. The impact on children is particularly concerning, as they are sometimes taken out of school to help with water collection, and their education suffers as a result. Some parents report that their children have become withdrawn and depressed, as they are unable to participate in normal childhood activities such as soccer practice due to the demands of water collection.

As the water crisis drags on, the wider impacts are becoming clear. The decline in agricultural productivity leads to a rise in food prices and a growing number of families struggling to meet their basic needs..

One of the community members, Mr. William Ramaoka tells Reddot Media that the water pump was since taken to the professionals to get fixed about a month ago and it hasn’t been returned with no update. “We have been doing follow-ups for weeks and they keep failing us” he said.

Another Pandemic: Mashashane Clinic Closes Up On Weekends.

For many people, weekends are a time to relax, spend time with family, and recharge for the upcoming week. However, for those who needs healthcare, weekends can present a challenge.

When the clinic is closed, it can be difficult to get the care you need. Residents of Mashashane has it dry when their community clinic closes on weekends and not been able to access medical care. It is even more drier for students that attend school everyday on weekdays. The impact of weekend clinic closure is significant, both in terms of individual health and public health.

For individuals, not been able to access medical care on weekends can lead to delayed treatment, worsening conditions, and a greater risk of complications. Public health is also affected, as studies have shown that lack of access to medical care on weekends can lead to an increase rate of hospitalization, longer hospitals stays, and a higher cost of care. These are serious issues that must be addressed in order to ensure that everyone has access to the care they need.

Mashashane Clinic operates Mondays to Fridays including national holidays. It opens at 7am and closes at 4pm on the dot. No night shifts, no access to an ambulance. The official Mashashane clinic statement that was issued on the 1st week of December 2023 stated that the Clinic will be changing it’s operating days as of the 18th December 2023 until further notice. The clinic’s Operational Manager that is said to have bid farewell to the clinic on Friday 09th February 2023 said that the clinic experiencing shortage of professional midwives. That was before she left.

On weekends, a lot happens. People gets injuried. It can be car accidents, mob attacks, streets fight and so forth. What must happen when the community clinic is closed ? One employee at the clinic tells Reddot that they have limited control over the clinic’s hours and policies. According to the employee, they simply follow the instructions of the clinic management. Even though the employee understood the frustration of people who need care on weekends, they said they had no power in this matter. They encouraged the community to contact the clinic management with their concerns.

The chairperson of the local youth league acknowledged that they had received many complaints about the clinic’s weekend closure. They expressed sympathy for people who were unable to access care on the weekends, and said that the issue was being taken seriously. The chairperson explained that the league was still working on a solution, and hoped to have a resolution soon. They encouraged community members to continue voicing their concerns and ideas.

Phuthego Ledwaba is a student at the local high school and has shared his concerns about the clinic’s weekend closure. Phuthego said that they have to miss school on weekdays to visit the clinic, or put up with the long travel distance to get access to get the care they needed on weekends. He expressed frustration at having to choose between school and health, and said that something needed to change. ‘We shouldn’t have to choose between our education and our health,’ he said.”

The impact of the clinic’s weekends closure extends beyond students. Newborns, pregnant women, and elders with chronic illnesses such as cancer, stroke and diabetes all rely on the clinic for care. Without access to the clinic on weekends, these vulnerable groups may struggle to get the care they need.

Mashashane residents only need the health care access that is suitable for them, and they are hoping for a change in this matter. Mr Ramashala says that the health and well-being of the community must be a top priority. The residents of Mashashane are trying to find a solution that works for everyone, and they encourage all community members to continue sharing their ideas. “We are stronger when we work together, and by working together, we can ensure that everyone has access to the care they need, when they need it.” Said Mr. Ramashala

Reddot talks to a 31-year-old Male from ga-Mabula outside Mokopane CBDs. He says he lost his job as a teacher, resulting to the mother of his child denying him access to his child because he was falsely accused of rape and failed to clear his name until today. He says his ex-girlfriend accused him of rape after she assaulted him and endured some serious injuries because she was insecure.

The accident led to him breaking things off with the girlfriend. At a later stage, the lady pressed charges and said he had raped him. “I don’t know if I’ll ever recover from this. I wish my ex-girlfriend could could tell the truth, so I can get reinstated as a teacher. This has affected the relationship between me and my family”. Said the victim.

False accusations of rape are a serious issue that need to be addressed, but they should not overshadow the very real experiences of victims of rape. It is possible to support both victims and those who are falsely accused, and it is important to do so in order to create a just and fair society. We can do this by providing support for victims, educating people about the issue, and ensuring that everyone involved in a rape case is treated fairly and with respect.
